All Good Things Must Come to an End

Today the Athletics Department at Concord Academy organized an “Athletics Assembly” to celebrate the Class of 2014 student-athletes for their performance over the last 4 years. I was unable to attend the event, but wanted to recognize and thank the CA community members who I did not get a chance to bid farewell.

First, thanks to former CA Athletic Director, Carol Anne Beach for bringing me on board as a squash coach and who, once eloquently reminded me after a tough day of coaching, that “we are all in it together.” Many thanks to current Head of School, Rick Hardy and Dean of Students and Community Life, David Rost for allowing me to live on campus and grow as a house parent.

Many thanks to Jenny Brennan, Director of Athletics and my colleagues in the Athletic Department for being part of teams that won with grace and lost with dignity. I would particularly like to extend my gratitude to Assistant Squash Coaches Marty Blue, Danielle Babcock, Josh Parker, Jon Ross, Roger Hunt and Charlotte Whitmore as well as all the numerous captains of the girls and boys varsity squash teams. Furthermore members of the Athletics Department – Kellie Smith, Reed Young, Mike Bouzan and Warren Samuels – deserve special thanks as well for critical support and programming.

Khelshala Celebrated International Sport for Development and Peace Day

On April 6, 2014 – Khelshala celebrated their first initiative towards the United Nations International Day of Sport for Development and Peace. For an overview, we encourage you to visit the Khel-Mel event with the theme, “Play Life-Sports for a Healthy Life”.

All age groups were welcomed to the event to participate whole heartedly and take part in lifetime sports, such as dance, aerobics, yoga, athletics, squash, tennis, badminton and table-tennis, which were made available for the day. The Khelshala and Majra children joined hands to commence a day of great importance not only for the Khelshala community, but also for the sports society as a whole. The sound of the Dhols, kicked off the Khelshala march in which a group of very enthusiastic local community members arrived to participate in the walk towards the Khel-Mel venue.

Preceding the march, the dance activity conducted by Mr. Sameer Mahajan, Director of Rockstar Academy, lifted the spirits of the children and energized them for a day packed with fun activities. Along with explaining the importance of dance and aerobics in maintaining health and wellbeing of oneself, he began with a warm up before teaching the children chorography he had planned for the session. The dance session was followed by yoga and meditation conducted by Pinki Jha explaining how yoga and meditation can make their minds sharp, peaceful and also how it can enhance their day to day well being, if practiced regularly. In addition, various athletic activities including hurdles and cone drills for agility over a 50m track were conducted by coaches from Panjab University, Chandigarh. Also, many other individual games like squash, tennis, badminton, and table-tennis were a part of the overall day and were managed by friends and volunteers. Our very own Khelshala coach, Mr. Anil Rathee, also directed a tennis tournament. Khelshala children also performed a street play. This was greatly enjoyed by everybody, especially by the group of St. John’s School children in attendance. Khel-Mel activities ended with a grand finale of tug of war competition.

To conclude the proceedings a small prize giving ceremony was hosted by Mr. Bajwa, Founder and Trustee of Khelshala. He also shared with everyone on how sport can help them to stay fit and healthy. The event coverage was carried out by the esteemed Doordarshan channel, and Langar (community lunch) was served to all attending, courtesy of Village Majra Panchayat.

We were truly delighted to have celebrated this United Nations initiative and hope it served the vision and mission of spreading awareness among the community promoting development and peace. We look forward to a bigger and better event next year. We hope to see you in 2015.

Advocating for Student-Athletes at Khelshala

I am conducting an online Indiegogo crowd sourcing fundraising campaign to volunteer and coach at Khelshala this summer. Donations towards this initiative will primarily:

  1. Allow Khelshala to spend its exisiting budget directly on the needs of Khelshala children by avoiding to pay administrative costs for officers/volunteers like me.
  2. Allow for direct squash teaching, coaching and mentoring of the Khelshala children by me.
  3. Allow for setting up a computer lab from our anticipated grant for computer equipment by the State Bank of India.

Priya, pictured above, is a gifted athlete who is also a gifted student. I will be helping Priya with written and oral English to help fulfill her dream of being admitted to one of the most saught after private schools in Chandigarh called the Sacred Heart School for Girls. I hope you will consider making a donation of any size on Indiegogo.

Supervising Co-Ed Intramural Squash

Today was the last day of classes for the 2012-13 academic year at Concord Academy which meant my evaluations were due for the co-ed intramural squash class that I have been teaching this spring. The course consisted of briefly revisiting the rules and etiquette of squash followed by timed games, conditioned games, offense/defense, round robins and team-based activities.

At the beginning of each class students also learned warm-up exercises and basic fitness routines. To allow for creativity and ownership of their learning process students also had the opportunity for “free play” to practice among themselves in a manner they saw fit. Furthermore, question and answers were given to students to educate them about the historical, economic and social aspects of the sport.

Overall, I had a few students who have the potential to play at the varsity level next winter. If they chose to enroll in summer squash camps then this will help further their preparation for the winter. At the end of class, I provide a list of resources with information on associations, magazines, books and local squash camps to help them continue their journey with squash. Hard to believe another season is over, but most of all I am blessed to work with such great kids.

Reflecting on the 2012-13 Winter Concord Academy Squash Season

It’s been just over 2 months since the end of the 2012-13 winter squash season at Concord Academy. One of the most frequent questions I get asked is “how was your season?” As with most things, looking back there were pluses and minuses, wins and losses and positives and negatives.

As a team, the girls varsity squad had a losing season, but were able to avoid low morale by the players’ ability to act as peer coaches for each other. The girls team maintained a positive dynamic during practices and matches. Meanwhile, the boys squad had a successful winning season.  They earned a place in the B Division at the New England Interscholastic Squash Association’s Championships and performed well with two of seven players finishing in the top 5 in their draws.

Even though there were two adult coaches for both the girls and boys teams, it proved difficult to adequately provide feedback to each member of the team in a timely fashion. Nonetheless, both the boys and girls captains and team members stepped up and demonstrated solid teamwork and communication that will bode well for their futures.

Sport and Development Documentary Filmmaking: Khelshala Next?

Earlier this month, I attended the 2013 UMass Boston Film Series to watch the movie China Heavyweight and listen to a question and answer session with the Director of the movie. Without giving away too much, for friends and colleagues in the sport and development field I recommend watching the movie. Below is the trailer.

The movie resonated with me since the master coach’s triumphs and tribulations were parallel to my observations of Coach Bajwa’s vision for Khelshala. While Khelshala graduates will be making their career decisions in the coming years, the young boxers in China Heavyweight illustrate the challenges of collective action versus individual pursuits in a resource-constrained environment.

In listening to the Director Yung Chang speak about the production process behind the film, I could not help but think that a Bollywood Director or documentary filmmaker would find an equally enriching storyline behind the children of Khelshala. A “Champion from Chandigarh” would be a fun movie to make.

Rest and Recreation in “God’s Own Country”

Ever since I was a young boy, I have visited Kerala, India to spend time with my grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins. Thanks to their generosity and kindness I have fond memories of my time in Kerala. I was able to create new memories with them during my recent travels to what is referred to “God’s Own Country.”

Soon after arriving in Kerala, my cousins organized a get together that involved cruising on a house-boat in the backwaters of Alleppey. Since it was low season, there were not many crowds, making it a leisurely cruise along with an authentic Kerala lunch.

Western Ghats.

Western Ghats.

Thereafter, we traveled to the Peermade area, where we went off-roading in a four-wheel drive jeep. Despite severely rocky roads, we climbed to about 4.500 feet with spectacular views of the Western Ghats, a mountain range that is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed reconnecting with my Kerala roots and highly recommend others to visit who are traveling to India.
